Why Organisations needs a Public Cloud, not a Private Cloud, by AppsCare – Google Apps Premier Partner

Speaking at the Cloud Computing World Forum in London on Tuesday, Salesforce.com’s chief scientist, JP Rangaswami slammed the concept of private cloud, claiming that the whole point of cloud computing is that resources, costs and risks are shared between multiple parties.
“Whenever anyone uses that phrase to you, just ask them who are you sharing costs with. If all the costs you’re sharing are just with you, you’re kidding yourself, it ain’t a cloud”, he said. “The only way it has value is if someone else is taking the risk and you can step it up or down. This isn’t just a question of infrastructure; IT is not just about hardware. Your processes have to be able to scale, your ability to put things on and take things off has to be able to scale – everything you do has to be ale to scale in both directions.”
In addition to the thoughts of JP Rangaswami, these points should provide an indication of the reality of converting to a private cloud.
Migrating to the cloud shifts capital expense to operational expense, unless operating a private cloud where an organisation has to build the entire data centre infrastructure itself – increasing capital expenditure in some cases.
The Public cloud improves utilization whilst being elastic enough to deal with spikes in usage.
Cloud creates the illusion of infinite capacity. This illusion remains in tact with a public cloud, as a business will never consume all of its capacity. On the other hand because the private cloud will only be so big, once the limit is reached, this magical illusion disappears.
For those that believe that converting to a private cloud will both save the business money whilst enabling it to obtain the benefits of cloud, are sadly wrong. An essential requisite of an effective private cloud is rigorous homogeneity across servers, network equipment, storage etc. Considering the organisation’s current data centre – homogeneity is not even a small blip on the radar.
