UK Hot on the Heels of USA in Cyber Monday Wars

With 8/10 UK adults now regularly buying items online, it’s not surprising that in the run-up to Christmas 2012 the UK’s online retailers are preparing for a cyber-shopping frenzy like never before.
Savoo.co.uk, the UK’s fastest growing money-saving voucher code website, predicts that Monday November 26, known as ‘Cyber Monday’ in the USA, will see UK online sales jump by 95% compared to last year. In 2011, British shoppers spent a staggering £19 million per hour on Cyber Monday and that figure is set to be smashed in 2012. Last year all UK online sales for Christmas shopping grew by 15%, amassing a staggering £7.75 billion.
But while these stats all point to a revolution in the way Brits shop, we have some internet shopping to do to match the online shopping crazy Americans. It is estimated that 212 million Americans took advantage of the discounts offered by US retailers on Cyber Monday, creating overall sales of $ 1.25 billion. And it seems the tech savvy Americans are no longer afraid of buying on a smartphone, with 15% of shoppers buying on the go compared to 5.6% in 2010.

What are we buying online to create these stats? 77% of British shoppers prefer to buy goods like CDs, DVDs, books and video games online and last year Amazon’s bestselling product was its own Kindle e-reader.
