Turkey’s popularity as a holiday destination is on the rise with figures from the Turkish Directorate General of State Airports Authority revealing that some 44.6 million global travellers passed through the country’s air travel hubs in the first half of 2010, up 24 per cent year on year. Research from independent travel agent sunshine.co.uk has also shown that Turkish destinations are especially popular with UK tourists this year.
According to a new report from the Post Office, UK visitors to Turkey currently face increased costs for tourist items, making it essential for them to budget their foreign currency spend before they head for the sun. The latest Post Office Holiday Money Report reveals UK tourists visiting Turkey face a 44 per cent price hike in holiday living costs this year, meaning holidaymakers will need to plan ahead to get the best value from their foreign currency and make their travel money go further.
Sarah Munro, Post Office Head of Travel Money, said: “Judging by the price rises recorded in our latest cost comparison survey, Turkey is unlikely to be the cheap destination that it was just a couple of years ago when the Post Office barometer identified the country as the best buy.”
“For 2010 our shopping basket of eight tourist staples indicates that Turkey is now 68 per cent more expensive than Spain.”
Post Office Travel Money recommends that UK holidaymakers shop around for the best deals on their foreign currency when planning any holiday. One way to save is to order travel money in advance rather than leaving foreign currency exchange to the last minute and buying travel money at the airport, where foreign exchange rates are likely to be less favourable.
