Post Office Travel Money Report Finds Europe Cheaper than UK for Diesel

Research from Post Office Travel Money’s Motoring on the Continent Report has revealed that UK holidaymakers may need to stretch their foreign currency further when filling up at the pump in Europe, with prices up as much as 24p a litre for unleaded petrol and 30p for diesel compared to 2009.
However, UK holidaymakers travelling abroad in a diesel vehicle can still expect to pay less per litre in Europe than in the UK, making their foreign currency stretch further. Compared to the UK they will be quids in when driving in Europe, with the exception of Norway, which is the most expensive European country in the Post Office Travel Money ranking when it comes to buying diesel fuel.
Travel money will go a lot further using a diesel car in top European destinations such as Spain (19 per cent cheaper a litre) and Ireland (10 per cent), while the best European destination for making foreign currency go further when topping up tanks with diesel is Luxembourg, offering the only sub-£1 litre of fuel in Europe. Meanwhile, France offers UK holidaymakers 5p less on a litre of diesel in this country.
Post Office Travel Money advises tourists to check fuel prices before planning their holiday driving route. By filling up in countries where fuel is cheaper, tourists can make their travel money go further, saving foreign currency to spend on arrival at their destination, rather than on getting there.
