Post Office Reveals Kids’ Holiday ‘Must Haves’ Could Bust the Family Travel Money Budget

As families jet off on holiday in search of sunnier climes this autumn, Post Office research shows they could face hidden beach costs they had not bargained for in their travel money budget.

The Post Office research shows that almost half of UK tourists are looking for ways to reduce their holiday costs and save travel money by eating out less, buying fewer drinks and cutting back on sightseeing excursions.

But, despite these good intentions, families could still get stung when using their travel money to pay for ‘must have’ kids’ items, such as buckets and spades, lilos, jelly shoes and pedalo rides.

As with other holiday costs, the Post Office Beach Barometer found big price variations in top European destinations that could rock the family budget and force cutbacks on travel money.

Travel money budgets are hardest hit in Greece, where families could pay over three times as much for the same six beach items (£56.50) as in Croatia (£19.41) and around twice as much as in Portugal, Malta, Italy, Turkey and Bulgaria.

However, there is good news for pressured parents worried about foreign exchange rates and escalating travel money costs. The rising pound, package discounting and falling resort prices mean they need not forgo their sunshine break. As foreign exchange rates improve, families buying their foreign currency will see that one pound now buys over nine per cent more euros than earlier in the year and over 20 per cent more US dollars, helping families’ travel money go just that bit further.
