One in five would ditch a loved one’s wedding to save money…and a quarter of us would even put the brakes on visiting family members if times got tough

(PRWEB UK) 28 June 2012

The wedding season may be upon us, but a new survey by social sharing site Have You Seen has revealed a staggering one in five Brits would ditch the wedding of a friend or family member to save a bit of extra cash during a recession.

These findings coincide with figures released this year, which found that the average wedding costs each guest a staggering £510 when presents, accommodation, transport and hen and stag parties are taken into consideration .

And it seems the girls are the worst culprits when it comes to bailing out on a loved one’s special day, with female respondents three times more likely to pass on the confetti and cake (23% compared to 18% of men).

The study also revealed that a quarter of Brits (25%) would refrain from visiting relatives because the cost of travelling is so high. Thirteen percent would even sell a family heirloom as a way of earning a bit of extra cash.

The YouGov study, which was commissioned on behalf of social sharing website Have You Seen, aims to highlight more cost effective ways to make and save money – including earning money by recommending products you like.

Dan Pearce, director of Have You Seen, comments: “It’s not surprising that people are starting to tighten their belts now that the country is back in recession – but skipping the weddings of friends and family is quite a drastic way to save money, especially when there are easier ways to make a bit of extra cash.

“Using platforms like Have You Seen allows you to shop online while still earning money, so you can even earn money by recommending items on gift lists to fellow wedding guests! Shoppers also have the option of sharing commission with friends and family, which benefits everyone.”

Have You Seen allows anyone with an online presence – be it email, Facebook, Twitter or Google+ – to share a product or service they like and would recommend to their network of friends and followers.

If the recommendation leads to a purchase, commission is earned and can be shared between both parties. The Have You Seen research revealed that 45 per cent of Brits online have already recommended products or services online via email or social media, proving that this is something that is already part of everyday life.

All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc. Total sample size was 2103 adults. Fieldwork was undertaken between 13th – 16th April 2012. The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all UK adults (aged 18+).

About Have You Seen:

We are always recommending products to our friends, family and colleagues through social and digital media. It comes naturally to us. Have You Seen is the first social sharing site of its kind that allows its members to earn money from sharing products and deals they have found with their social contacts, whether via email or social networks. The service allows users to simply sign up with an email address and get sharing with their social network and email contacts straightaway. Users then earn a commission if someone buys a product or service they have recommended. They also have the choice of sharing or passing on all of the commission to friends and family, thereby encouraging the concept of ‘social sharing’. This new approach to affiliate marketing marks an evolutionary shift, making a significant earning potential accessible to the masses. Nearly 2,000 retailers are already affiliated with the service.

Traffic Junction is one of the largest affiliate marketing publishers and a trend-setter in performance-based marketing solutions. It was recognised as one of the Top 30 companies in the UK in The Sunday Times Tech Track 2010.
