New York Christmas Shopping Breaks are Making UK Holidaymakers’ Travel Money go Further

The Post Office third annual Christmas Shopping Guide has revealed that UK holidaymakers can make their travel money go further in the shops this Christmas in New York, as the pound edges up in value against the dollar.

The report compares the travel money savings UK shoppers can make if they take advantage of current foreign currency exchange rates against the dollar, paired with generally lower prices available in New York stores.

The guide reveals that the biggest New York savings was on a men’s shirt from lifestyle brand Abercrombie and Fitch. The shirt normally costs £70 in London, but taking foreign currency exchange rates into account, the garment will cost UK shoppers in New York a mere £23.

On the toy front, the popular ‘Rubik’s 360’ puzzle was 48 per cent cheaper in New York at current foreign currency exchange rates, than if purchased in London.

Post Office Head of Travel Services Sarah Munro said: “There are great shopping bargains to be found abroad, providing shoppers do their homework on suitable holiday destinations where favourable foreign currency exchange rates can make their travel money go further.

“The good news is that current favourable foreign currency exchange rates mean sterling is now worth 12.7 per cent more than 12 months ago and over 23 per cent more than at its low point against the US dollar in March this year. Holidaymakers travelling to New York can expect their travel money to stretch a lot further than when the pound plummeted prior to Christmas 2008. With competitively priced short breaks still available, the outlook for shoppers to take advantage of strong foreign currency exchange rates looks brighter this winter.”
