RoadFish.com men’s lifestyle and finance magazine today talked up London’s Udderbelly Festival as a fun event to attend for both London visitors and locals. The Udderbelly Festival is a three-month event featuring stand-up comedy, cabaret, music, dance performances, and more held in an inflatable purple cow tent at London’s Southbank Centre. RoadFish.com was impressed by the sheer quantity of comedians scheduled to perform at this year’s festival, many of them up-and-comers mixed with the more well-known household names. Ticket prices range from about 10-25 pounds per show, depending on the act.

Gareth Vipers reported for the London Evening Standard that there are over 50 acts booked to perform over the 12 weeks that the festival will run, including musical comedy duo Abandoman, Australian comedian Tim Minchin, Sean Hughes, and Howard Marks adding that there truly is something for everyone. In addition to the classic and well-known purple cow tent, this year will include a second venue for the first time known as the London Wonderground. Side performances including the Australian circus group, Cantina, will be held at this second tent, which is touted as being reminiscent of 20th century Coney Island.

The Udderbelly Festival is put on by Underbelly, a UK-based live entertainment company. On Underbelly’s official website, it’s stated that Underbelly Productions produces and promotes live shows for UK and international touring, boasting over 350,000 tickets sold to shows last year. Udderbelly got its start in 2009, when Underbelly and Southbank Centre collaborated to launch an 8-week summer festival featuring comedy, circus, family, and cabaret shows. The length of the festival was extended in 2010 to 10 weeks, in 2011 for 13 weeks, and this year the festival will run for another 13 weeks from April 5th through July 8th.

RoadFish.com was impressed with all of the different happenings going on around London in April, but Udderbelly stood out. Stated RoadFish.com’s Senior staff writer, “I am amazed at the amount of events and different shows and festivals going on at once all over London—the Shakespeare Festival, activities for St. George’s Day, the Damien Hirst exhibit at the Tate Modern. The Udderbelly Festival stood out to me because of the dynamic performances, especially the comedic aspect which greatly appeals to me. I might just need to hire me some estate agents and move to London for a year to soak in not only the culture but the seemingly endless festivities the city boasts.”

This year’s festival will include such musicians as beatboxing group The Vocal Orchestra, and the energetic Cuban group Havana Rumba. Tim Minchin, Rufus Hound, and Greg Proops will headline the comedy acts and among the other comedians performing will be Greg Davies, Andi Osho, Terry Alderton, Patrick Monahan, Milton Jones, Michael Winslow, Wil Anderson, Andrew Maxwell, and Nina Conti.

The Udderbelly Festival at Southbank Centre can be found in Jubilee Gardens, with the famous purple cow tent specifically located between the London Eye and the Royal Festival Hall. There will also be an outdoor bar and public food stands. This is the fourth year for this iconic festival, and boasted 50,000 attendees to the festival in 2011.

RoadFish.com’s Senior staff writer is quoted as saying, “Anyone that knows me knows that I love to laugh. This festival sounds right up my alley. I’ve never heard of a festival quite like this before either, making it quite unique to London. I’m adding it to my Bucket List of things to do before I die.”

According to the above-mentioned London Evening Standard article, the Udderbelly Festival is also reportedly quite kid-friendly, with a kids’ Comedy Club and a brand-new show called “Tiddler and Other Terrific Tales” geared towards youngsters.
