Collaborative consumption proves popular as consumers try to curb post-Christmas spending

Brighton, UK (PRWEB UK) 11 January 2013

New figures show that the average adult will spend £20,072 on Christmas in their lifetime and estimates put the 2012 festive spend at £500 per adult.

The numbers, compiled by Employment Savings Trust (NEST) and MoneySupermarket, show that over the course of a 50-year working career we will spend on Christmas what is equivalent to a year’s salary for many.

But consumers needn’t remove fun from their lives when dealing with the financial January hangover. Named by TIME magazine as one of ten ideas that will change the world, collaborative consumption is set to be one of the biggest trends in 2013.

For just a small annual membership fee, Love Home Swap invites members to contact people in over 100 countries, and proceed to confirm dates and travel arrangements with a downloadable agreement form. Members are then given the opportunity to review the service by leaving a testimonial on the website.

Properties on offer include everything from Edwardian and Victorian properties in London’s Chelsea and Crouch End, to private villas in Australia and beach cottages in Hawaii.

For many, as well as being a great way to save money, house swapping is a refreshing alternative to traditional holidays and staying in hotels. “I enjoy the benefits of staying in another member’s home without the restrictions of a hotel. All in all, it’s a much more enjoyable experience,” says Cliona from Dublin.

Members can also swap within their own country, which is ideal for shorter breaks to explore new areas closer to home. Mara from Camden, London, United Kingdom, swapped her trendy top-floor flat for a cosy home in Cambridge where she enjoyed punting on the river. “I enjoy letting others stay in our place,” says another member.
